I’ve been meaning to talk about this book. It’s called Shiver, by Maggie Stiefvater. Beautiful writing, almost flawless pacing, an original plot, and lots drama. In other words, a perfect book for me. It’s about this girl, Grace, who had been bitten by a pack of werewolves when she was 12, and was rescued by one of them, Sam. She has this mutual connection with Sam (he was the also only who didn’t bite her) and one day, after a boy died after being bitten by a wolf and the wolves are being hunted down, Grace finally meets Sam who rescued her, because he’d been shot and became human. They become wolves when the temperature gets too low, and after a few years, they stop becoming human. So their love is almost impossible. A lot of stuff happens in between, involving the boy who was bitten and allegedly dead but is now actually a wolf, but finally they try to find a cure so that they can remain human forever. I love all the imagery Stiefvater employs, and her writing style is so lyrical. The POVs alternate between Grace and Sam, and something happens every minute, so there’s never a draggy moment.
Shiver has just been selected as one of Publishers Weekly Best Books of 2009 and also is one of Amazon’s Top Ten Books for Teens. Her sequel to Shiver, Linger, is coming out in the spring/summer of 2010. Can’t wait can’t wait!
